How realistic is the show? What are the realistic/unrealistic parts?

Unrealistic parts: about 5 deaths per episode, Warden keeps his job
throughout 6 seasons. Grand finale of last episode nothing short of
exploding a nuke inside the prison and killing every character.
Prisoners have access to elevator shafts, storage closets, stairways.
Every civilian character who works at Oz has some personal trauma that
directly involves an inmate when he was on the outside. Chinese
immigrants have nowhere else to stay but at a maximum security prison.
A prisoner gets severely burned, and mysteriously disappears from the
hospital ward--- nobody bothers to search for him until 2 seasons
later. Drugs that make you magically age.

Yeah I'm just finishing season 4 on DVD and the unrealism is
bringing me down. Drugs that magically age you, and don't forget
- if it ages you 20 years, then your 20 year sentence is up and
you're free. I'd also add that some of the violence just looks
absurd - Adabizi (sp?) spitting up blood the color of kool-aid,
O'Reilly cutting his hand and blood instantaneously spurting out,
again a silly bright red color and thickness, and that one scene
where they're slammming Beecher's head into the table: the sound
of the head slams is hopelessly out of of sync with the action
like some Japanese sci-fi flick. Too bad, I'll probably stop
watching after season 4, even though there are some terrific
actors.

I believe that the buttf*cking is real..the rest, well, I'm not sure.
Hope that helps!

I can't say how realistic the show was, since I've never had to stay
at a Maximum Security prison.

I agree completely with the first poster. A maximum security prison
where prisoners are left unsupervised long enough to brick someone up
inside a wall? Or nail someone to the gymnasium floor? Or grind up
glass in the kitchen? Nevermind all the raping going on behind those
clear, plexiglass cell walls that all look out into a common area with
a great big guard center in the middle.

Despite the oh-come-on factor, I did really like the show and get a
kick out of seeing all the inmates showing up on Law and Order (pick
one, any one). I wonder if Alvarez still has all those tatooes now
he's a detective.

As far a the entertainment aspects of OZ go.. well worth watching. The
series was well done (my opinion), with some great actors/characters.
The storyline pretty much kept you at the edge of your seat no matter
how unrealistic it may have seemed (and there were times where you did
find yourself saying the "ohhhhh c'monnnnnnn now....".... but it's
still worth the watch and if you're considering maybe purchasing the
series on DVD... even well worth the purchase. (Yup... I've invested a
few $$ into the DVD's myself... just wish HBO would release 'em a
little faster @#$&%!! )

P.S. You may want to keep the kiddies away though... not suitable for
those under the age of 16 or so.... pretty graphic!

They will be. It looks like Season 5 will be out in June, and Season 6
in September.

OZ sugarcoats the reality of prison life for the masses. You don't want
to know what really goes on in prisons after the lights are turned off.
