Hello,

I am a Correctional Cpl. from Sussex Correctional Institution in Delaware.
Just found this newsgroup and thought I would see what kind of issues are
being discussed.
I also am the webmaster for our Correctional Officers Union website

http://www.truetoblue.org

If you go to the news department, you will find a lot of the issues that are
hot right now with De. Correctional Officers. Year 2004 up to the present,
we were in the news a LOT.

I would be interested in hearing from other Correctional Officers from
across the nation and hear of you guys are having a lot of the same
problems.

Low morale
Low staffing levels
Low standards, thus bringing in people that shouldn't be Correctional
Officers
Low pay to new officers coming in
Officers being frozen sometimes twice a week, working far too many hours
Institutions relying heavily on overtime

In the past two years, we have had some major breakdowns. We had an escape,
first time in more than 20 years. A hostage situation, where a counselor was
held for seven hours, raped, and the inmate had to be shot and died as a
result.

Hope to hear from other correctional officers.

Hi. alt.prisons.officer is a newsgroup that very rarely gets posts,
most of which are usually off-topic.

If you are looking for a discussion, try alt.prisons. If you can
stand the crazies, that is.

think. :)

It's been worse and better here in Michigan, depending on the times. I've
got 18 years in and have seen both. Good luck and best wishes.

I haven't been with the PA Dept. of Corrections for very long, but from
what is being mentioned here seems to be the same in some ways at my
correctional institution. However, I was wondering if you have the same
problems concerning staff members cutting other staff members throats. I
mean, does this occur a lot at your institution?
To better describe the situation, when I came to work at the
institution, I heard a lot of different staff members mention that the major
problems they dealt with, other than the inmates, were staff related issues.
Examples of the this would be poor leadership, poor training, which was
because some "Over inflated ego sergeant or lieutenant" was trying to get
promoted or screw someone over because they didn't like somebody. On the
other hand, I do recognize there are some decent staff members who do their
job without causing problems with other staff members.
Another issue to mention would be the Dept trying to exemplify itself
like a paramilitary organization, when they are nothing close. This
situation would be proven in the training being provided and the poor
leadership. Of course, I can say this, because I was in the military and in
the combat ops. I also served in the Gulf.
Finally, I'm sorry to hear about your situation and I hope the issues at
your institution are resolved shortly.

Pardon me for this interruption...I'm not a screw, uh I mean CO. I'm
just an old ex-con lurker. I'm happy to hear y'all are just regular
folks like I always suspected; just doin' a job.

Anyway, the reason for this post is your sig, "Anonymous". How
anonymous are you when you post as "Richard R Clark Jr."
