I was wondering if you could shed some light on this issue. There seems

to be a lot of posturing on the issue of cutting money to the Prison
system in Califonia under the current budget negotiations. The
Democrats claim that this would result in the release of 20,000
prisoners. Are they exagerating or is this true? In the Los Angeles
Times they kick a number of about 450 million dollar cut. The State
will be broke by August if they don't approve the budget. The
Republicans have got the Dems by the balls and want to insist on cuts
and no new taxes. How serious is it really? I helped put away someone
and didn't think he were getting out soon. He's only in for two years
(spousal abuse) and I was told he might get out in half the time. Could

he get out sooner?

TIA

I think there are about 160K guys in prison. Certainly they could cut
back 20K, no? And if they were simply "dope fiends" and not violent I
would think folks' safety would be OK, no?
But I read recently if the state closed ALL the prisons their would
still be MAJOR debt, as the priz biz only takes about 5%. That is
still to much but in the scheme of things, naw.
As I understand it, your guy is still getting out and I've been told
for every day he is a "good boy" he gets a day off his sentence even
if the state is not broke.
BTW, there is NOTHING serious in California. It is a joke.

The problem is that we as a society have locked up too many people, rather
than treat some of the symptoms that cause crimes. We should be locking up
the people we are afraid of...not just those we are mad at.

Mike;

The article is very accurate, I was a Correctional Officer for thirty
years and know ( from the last "open door", the state can easily dump
twenty thousand felons back on the streets. Most of these will be first
time felons and none will be capital criminals, i.e. no murders etc.
Wife beaters, child molesters, car jackers. And no third strikers.

If you have a fear about this person being released, call the Department
of Corrections and express your fears, contrary to popular belief, it
does help.
A retire one.
